The Dreams of Langston Hughes

I found this amazing book called The Dream Keeper by Langston Hughes. Here are a few poems from that book:

The Dream Keeper

Bring me all of your dreams,
You dreamer,
Bring me all your
Heart melodies
That I may wrap them
In a blue cloud-cloth
Away from the too-rough fingers
Of the world.

Dreams

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Picture Books for Multi-racial Families

I found this listmania on amazon, it is a list of picture books featuring multi-racial and trans racial families. Very cool:

Vegans and Buddhists- my two homes

I am subscribed to a listserve for vegans in the Bay Area. Yesterday I sent the list a link to a new blog I started: vegansangha.wordpress.com. This is one reply that I received:

Hi Jerlina,

In my experience, Buddhists don't seem open to veganism. Do you have any idea why not, since they are always talking about 'doing no harm' and not stepping on bugs, etc...? I've been interested in Buddhism but this issue keeps me from getting more deeply involved. They just don't seem to get it.

Reading this made me sad and confused. Why do these two "identities" appear to be mutually exclusive? Well, they aren't always, just usually. =(

Ethiopian Jazz

A few years ago while I was living in New York my friend took me to a jazz club in Harlem and on our drive there from the Lower East Side he played a CD called Ethiopiques which included this wonderful song called "Tezeta."
