After college I moved to New York and lived as a hipster for about 12 months. I worked at Vice and went to wild parties in the lower east side. This band was on Vice's label and I went to a party where these guys were headlining and I ended up getting a dance with the main singer. Anyway, this song is definitely part of the sound track of my time in the big city.
The Stills were also a big part of my life:
and this song is ahhhsome (they loved this guy at Vice): and I used to listen to these two before I'd go out, woweeee, how fun.
A few months ago I watched a really depressing movie. It bumbed me out so bad that I went online to find something that would chear me up and I found these renditions of the ABCs and a song called Dancin all done on Sesame Street. So heart warming!
Yesterday i got to spend time with my family including two of my cousins, my auntie, my uncle, my nephew and my mom. The occasion was that my cousin Monique gave birth to the newest addition to our family- Jude James Moran. What joy! These pictures are from my nephew Noah's 3rd birthday party a few weeks ago.
Home is where the lake is, lake Merritt that is. I found this picture online of the mural under the over pass that separates Lake Merritt from the Grand Lake shopping district. This has got to be my most favorite place in the world (not under the overpass, well maybe under the overpass, but this area in general.)
So I bought the ingredients to make fermented cashew cheese yesterday at Good Earth in Fairfax. So far all I think I need are wheat berries to make rejuvelac (the pro-biotic I'll use to ferment the nuts), cashews and pink himalayan sea salt. They had it all and the people who work there seem to know everything about every kind of food and condiment. Very impressive and slightly comical. So I'm on the fermentation train along with most of my friends who are now pickling, making cheeses, sourdough, kimchi, making kombucha. In an article I found the author, who is an omnivore with no apparent dietary restrictions, said she loves to try raw and vegan food (and probably gluten free too) because new combinations and ingredients that are experimented with open up her food world. I totally agree. The more foods I try the more kind of foods that I discover I like- like horseradish! Ok, so here is a list I found on amazon of the Most Intriguing Vegan Cookbooks, I found it when I was looking for the The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook that I found in the bibliography of Wild Fermentation: The Flavor, Nutrition and Craft of Live Culture Foods.
Yes, it's true, this guy runs dozens upon dozens of miles quickly, all powered by the energy of plants. Yay! Here's the New York Times article on this vegan ultramarathoner: Diet and Exercise to the Extreme
This is the Dharma talk that brought me to practice at San Francisco Zen Center: End of the World by Lou Hartman. I haven't listened to it in a while but I do talk about it every now and then. In a nut shell he says when things get really bad and the end seems to be upon us, take everything one step at a time, as if each step is your last. Thanks Lou.
When I went to Olympia last month Marisa took me to free choir. There was a woman there named Kimya Dawson who is very popular in Olympia and here are one of her songs:
